Local Attractions
Popular with tourists at almost all times of the year Sarlat is a beautiful, well restored town a few kilometres north of the River Dordogne.
The old town, dating from both medieval and renaissance times is a pleasure to visit, especially during the spring and autumn, or early in the morning. If you can catch the early morning sunshine on the yellow sandstone buildings, so much the better.
The Gouffre de Padirac is an incredible cave system in the Dordogne, containing an underground river and gorge and a huge cavern. Underground lakes and pools and stalactite formations all add to its appeal but somehow it is the sheer size of the caverns that is really incredible. It is the most visited system of French caves and the number one tourist attraction of the Midi-Pyrenees region.
Lascaux Caves
Lascaux Caves is a network of caves near the village of Montignac, in the Dordogne in southwestern France. Over 600 parietal wall paintings cover the interior walls and ceilings of the cave. The paintings represent primarily large animals, typical local contemporary fauna that correspond with the fossil record of the Upper Paleolithic in the area.
Eyrignac et ses Jardins
In the heart of the Périgord Noir, near Sarlat, come and discover 10 hectares of plant sculptures. A unique example of Topiary Art in France with new and more colorful universes: visit the 7 gardens according to your desires and enjoy a walk in the middle of nature on the 200-hectare forest estate.
Very close to Sarlat, in the Enéa valley, Sainte-Nathalène is a beautiful village. Classified as a "tourist town", it is the place to visit for all those who wish to discover the traditional Périgord heritage. It is part of a natural area of ecological, faunal and floristic interest. Part of its limestone hillsides is preserved as a Natura 2000 area and the entire Aenea valley is part of a listed site.
Rocamadour
Rocamadour has attracted visitors for its setting in a gorge above a tributary of the River Dordogne and especially for its historical monuments and its sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which for centuries, dating back to the turn of the 12th century, has attracted historical and anonymous pilgrims from many countries, among them kings, bishops and nobles.
